The Wonders of Polar Bears in the Tundra, by Phillipe J.

How much do you know about polar bears? I assume not much, but no worries. This is the reason for this writing. Polar bears are the Earth’s biggest carnivore weighing at most 990 lbs -330 lbs, and stand at 9.8ft to 5.9. Being the earth’s biggest carnivore, you would expect them to be the earth’s greatest hunters or at least in the top 5- 10, but only 2% of their hunts are successful. Even though polar bears are  meat eaters, seals are their favorite meat, but due to their poor hunting, bears mostly survive on carcasses or settle for small mammals, birds, eggs, and vegetation. Additionally, polar bears are actually black, but instead have translucent fur which reflects visible light. This interesting feature greatly helps with hunting as they are basically camouflaged with the snow.

It is no coincidence that polar bears live in the tundra, the coldest biome in the world, as we always associate polar bears with snow and you might think that climate change was their biggest threat, but no. Oil and gas industries are looking over to the arctic which might destroy their main habitat, and push them closer to civilization which will endanger both sides. As global warming increases, the polar bear community is  rapidly declining and might be down by 30% in 2050. Those cuddly yet dangerous predators are tied in several ways with human culture and as the main species on this planet we should protect them.
