The British Museum, as explained by an American ー by Romeo L.

10 Must-See Treasures of the British Museum    The British Museum in London: tickets, opening times, exhibitions

The British Museum is one of the most well-known museums, housed with artifacts from human history and culture. Founded in London on June 7тн, 1753, throughout the years, millions of people had come to view what the institution had in store for them. While it’s hard to access the place now (mostly due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic), its global history can still be viewed online. Here, I will explain a couple of important things that were in the museum.

The Rosetta Stone is perhaps the most famous artifact in the British Museum. Written in 196 B.C, it was once an Ancient Egyptian decree written in three different scripts (hieroglyphs, Demotic, and Ancient Greek). Countless decades later, a mere fragment of the complete slab was discovered. That didn’t stop scholars from translating the Rosetta Stone and uncovering the meaning of the once unknown hieroglyphs. The stone was put on public display at the museum in 1802, where it remains to this day.

On a more interesting note, the British Museum once had a certain room called “The Secretum”. It was opened in 1865, in response to the Obscene Publications Act of 1857. The objects and artifacts presented are...uhhhh...let’s just refer to them as questionable things, okay? It wasn’t something you could easily access, though. The Secretum required a permit, and you had to be a gentleman who could demonstrate “mature years and sound morals”. There’s no point in getting a permit now, as the room closed in the 1960s, though its artifacts remain scattered throughout the museum. You can also search for them online, but I would strongly advise not doing so. It gets a little too suggestive at times.
Once COVID-19 is eventually settled with, please consider heading to London and visiting the British Museum. You may learn something you've never known before, or see the worlds history in a new perspective. For now, you can view the exhibits online at britishmuseum.org. It may be your only option, considering that plane tickets to the UK are fairly expensive, and there’s still a pandemic going on.

  1. I really like how you added in the pictures because they are really interesting and I like how you put your opinion based off of what fact you brought up.
