Ellis Island is a very historical island. It was the official entry point for immigrants. Many families that
live in the U.S today have ancestors who came here through Ellis Island. Many of the people who came to
Ellis Island were from Southern Europe. For example Italy, Russia, and Poland. The people who migrated
to the U.S wanted to escape poverty, and religious restrictions.

The trip to the island would take from one to two weeks and not everyone on the boat was treated the same.
Upper class people got to live on the upper deck of the boat. They got to eat nice food and sleep in
comfortable beds. While people of lower class had to sleep below the deck on a hard cold floor. They had to
eat scraps and barely got to eat meals. When it came time to get off the boat inspectors would have to
inspect the boat for diseases. The upper class people were the priority. People of upper class got to get off
of the boat sooner than people of lower class because they were the priority. For people of lower class it
would take from one to two days to get them off the boat.
